Wheaties and Mennonites

We are not so different... we evangelicals, with our name brand jeans and our pedicured feet (not that I really do that)... than the mennonites that we may say we are not like. I just returned from Pass Christian, MS working with the Mennonite Disaster service. The group I went with was not Mennonite, but we were embraced by them nonetheless. We are not so different. We are much more alike. The best part about the trip was hearing how the church (God's church - not a specific denomination) is helping communities pick up the pieces since the government is unable. I saw people helping each other out, giving from their need and doing it just because. The church is pulling together. One scripture that was talked about was when Jesus said that the "son of man has no place to rest his head"... not sure where that is yet, but the guy who shared it did so in conjuction with the "doing for the least of these" passage and it put the whole trip into perspective. I gained so much more from the trip than I thought. I went thinking I had something to offer others, but they touched my life instead. So conceited I am at times. When a person looks at what needs to be done out there, it is overwhelming - there is so much still... it will be years. It was an amazing trip though. THe car ride alone was very fun - thanks to Matt, Jeremy and Rachel. We laughed alot, sometimes out of pure exhaustion. Speaking of exhaustion, I am tired.

Blessings.

For what it's worth, there are numerous former Wheaties who have become Mennonites, and those, like myself, who were Mennonites even when they went to Wheaton (Tho' we were few in number).
If you're interested, Living water community church (livingwatercommunitychurch.org)is a Chicago Mennonite church with quite a few Wheaties in it.
