Wheaties and Mennonites

We are not so different... we evangelicals, with our name brand jeans and our pedicured feet (not that I really do that)... than the mennonites that we may say we are not like. I just returned from Pass Christian, MS working with the Mennonite Disaster service. The group I went with was not Mennonite, but we were embraced by them nonetheless. We are not so different. We are much more alike. The best part about the trip was hearing how the church (God's church - not a specific denomination) is helping communities pick up the pieces since the government is unable. I saw people helping each other out, giving from their need and doing it just because. The church is pulling together. One scripture that was talked about was when Jesus said that the "son of man has no place to rest his head"... not sure where that is yet, but the guy who shared it did so in conjuction with the "doing for the least of these" passage and it put the whole trip into perspective. I gained so much more from the trip than I thought. I went thinking I had something to offer others, but they touched my life instead. So conceited I am at times. When a person looks at what needs to be done out there, it is overwhelming - there is so much still... it will be years. It was an amazing trip though. THe car ride alone was very fun - thanks to Matt, Jeremy and Rachel. We laughed alot, sometimes out of pure exhaustion. Speaking of exhaustion, I am tired.

Blessings.

thirtyone

Today I am thirty one. I guess it makes my parents feel older than I feel :-) Great news... the all points bulletin worked - I found my headlamp. Woohoo. I was very saddened at the prospect of losing it. I seem to be losing more these days. My bedroom is the Bermuda Triangle. However, the triangle has been coming together today. Finally.

I am getting ready to go to Pass Christian, Mississippi to do some hurricane relief stuff with the Mennonite Disaster Service. I am really looking forward to it. The three people going with me are Jeremy, Rachel and Matt. Matt looks like an anglo-hollywood Jesus. I saw an illustration of Jesus yesterday as a clown. I don't know how I feel about it. It talked about Him as a clown that mocked world systems, politics and religions and did fun things like pay taxes from a coin that was found in the mouth of a fish or entering the city on a donkey. I suppose these could be "clown-ish" things, however, I did not like my Lord depicted as a clown... too many bad connotations to override any positive ones. This particular video I watched also talked about the eschatalogical parallels that are in the circus. Again, a stretch.... although an amusing one.
Besides, I have never cared much for circuses or clowns.

Si se puede.

FOUND: Elusive Elk

I have recovered the elusive elk earrings. Where? Well, in my dresser where I suppose the belong. BUT, they were in a very small purple velvet pouch. The likes of pouch I have never seen before. I believe there is a conspiracy at work here... a person who is trying to make me crazy... now they have taken my headlamp... I am putting out an APB on the headlamp... if any of the readers of this blog have seen the aforementioned headlamp, please help a sister out.

Tonight was HOUSE DINNER. I cooked, well, prepared the meal. I made tacos (pronounced: tackose ... because it is fun). We ate, we laughed, we cried, it was like Cats with food... I want to do it again and again. It was the last house dinner of the year. Two of the roomies are graduating, some are leaving for the summer, etc. I only like change when I initiate it... otherwise it flat out annoys me.

"Come on the ride that train" is currently playing on the radio and I am having flashbacks of Washingtons in Fort Collins... ah, Ft. Collins... A drinking town with a college problem.

I am leaving for Mississippi in 3 days. So wierd. It came really fast - thus the need for the headlamp - where could mr. misterio have placed it? My sister is turning 33 tomorrow. Happy birthday Ann. I love you.

May your headlamps shine on your birthdays and help you find your elk earrings.
